Rainy season is the best season for the plantation, but we can grow plants in almost all seasons to keep the earth green. Tree planting is typical an annual event during rainy seasons. It is an opportunity to do noble –social – environment work and get photographed for news items. Once, the drive ends the plants are left at the mercy of abiotic and biotic stresses.
This article gives simple methodology to reduce the mortality of sampling from the beginning and effective use of organic waste, even if someone lacks experience in maintaining tree saplings.
Research shows that if soil contains 50% organic material such as dead wood, grass, leaves, branches and other decaying natural material, it is a perfect recipe for growing plants without much human intervention. Using this fact, we can increase the survival rate of plants saplings, especially when the plant drives are conducted in urban areas.
Secondly, the following law of nature can drastically improve the chances of survival and growth. At mass level we should plant the native species of the areas. Finding about the native species of trees and plants is no rocket science. Find places that have old tress growing since your grandfather times. These place are usually temples and old religious places . Many old government building and housing areas will also have old tree surviving. Identify communities working in this domain and refer to books and even painting that have trees.
Third, using organic garbage and green bio-mass as bio-fertilizer also improves the rate of survival. It does not cost much. And the drive can be conducted even without using “gobar” or any other commercial fertilizer for mass planting to reduce the overall cost.
Fourth, goal setting: Do you want garden in your home or home in the garden. It depends on the way you think. Do you want your home part of the nature or otherwise? In-fact countries like Singapore have gone one step further. They have implemented and envisioned a city in a garder, sorry a city in a forest. A city made of Portland cement but enclosed, engrossed and wrapped up with green cover.
Procedure :
Step 1: Dig a hemisphere or cubiodical shaped hole at the place you want to plant the tree. The hemisphere must have diameter of 2 - 3 feet. In case, you are planting tree sapling in a container, try to get a container that has diameter and height as bigh as 3 feet.
Step 2: Add a woodly layer (collection of broken stems, branches of trees, brown leaves, semi-hard twigs and other decaying wood material) first at the bottom of the hemisphere. The wood material will help the plant with the Carbon Cycle.
Step 3: Add a green layer (collection of green leaves, green stem parts and other decaying green material) in the second layer. The green material will help the plant with the Nitrogen Cycle. Organic waste such fruit and vegetable peels makes excellent choice as organic material.
Step 4: Add additional mineral nutrients in case you have budget such as wood ash (100 grams), crushed lime stone (100 grams) and rock salt (10 grams) mixture.
Step 5: Add additional live bacteria and fungi inoculations in case you have budget. You may add things such as jaggery, yeast, lactic acid, mycrorizal fungi, actinomycetes etc. Some of these are available naturally in cow dung, goat dung, pig dung, camel, horse and other animal natural waste.
Step 6: Now, plant the tree sapling and cover it with green / brown mulch layer. Water the tree sapling and finally mulch for maintaining moisture in the soil for longer period.
Today, the problem is not that the people are not aware of the root cause of pollution, erratic climate, dust storms but lack of will power to overcome these challenges. Some are waiting for technological innovation to save them from climate fury, some are waiting for some politicians to do something for cause of climate and some others are just waiting for NGO to do some miracle to change the situation, as if we do not have time for plantation. We live in a world that is common, a common resource and let us not forget planting tree can save the world and no technology or politicians can
